DEXA TECHNOLOGY

DEXA is an excellent method to measure and monitor body composition in athletes, fitness conscious individuals and obese patients undergoing weight loss. With regular assessments of body composition the monitoring can be used to change the nutritional status and health status of the individual.

KEY POINTS:
Accurate body composition assessments are vital to monitoring growth, training outcomes, health and nutritional status of athletes.
Regular assessments of body composition may allow for detection of potentially harmful changes that occur as a result of inappropriate nutritional practices, excessive training or illness, and to relate body composition status to performance.
NOTE:
To obtain a total bodyscan at K8 it is a radiation safety requirement that a GP referral be obtained before the scan can take place.

COMMON RADITION EXPOSURES:
People are exposed to radiation daily from different sources, such as naturally occurring radioactive materials in the soil and cosmic rays from outer space (of which we receive more when flying in a airplane) Some common ways that people are exposed to radiation and associated doses are shown below:
Source of exposure
Dose in Sievert
Total Body scan at K8
0.03mSv
Exposure to cosmic rays during a flight from Melb to Syd
0.04mSv
One dental X-Ray
0.04-0.15mSv
One Chest X-Ray
0.1mSv
One Mammogram
0.7mSv
One Year of exposure to natural radiation (soil, cosmic rays etc)
3.0mSv
